Ageing and glycation: what’s the connection?
Glycation is an important biochemical process linking ageing, blood-sugar regulation, and tissue damage. In simple terms, it happens when sugars in the bloodstream attach themselves to proteins, fats or DNA without the body’s normal enzymatic control.
Over time, these reactions can create compounds called advanced glycation end products (AGEs).
1. Glycation can make tissues less flexible
Collagen and elastin are particularly important because they provide structure and elasticity to the skin, blood vessels, tendons and other connective tissues.
When sugars interact with collagen, they can form cross-links between collagen molecules. The result can be:
Less flexible collagen
Stiffer connective tissue
Reduced skin elasticity
More visible wrinkles
Greater vascular stiffness
This is one reason glycation is sometimes described as "sugar ageing".
2. AGEs can promote inflammation and oxidative stress
AGEs don't simply accumulate passively. Some can interact with cellular receptors, particularly a receptor known as RAGE (receptor for advanced glycation end products).
This can stimulate signalling pathways associated with:
AGEs → RAGE activation → oxidative stress → inflammation → cellular/tissue damage
Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are themselves closely associated with the ageing process.
3. Glycation affects blood vessels
AGE accumulation can contribute to changes in the structure and function of blood vessels. Glycated proteins can become stiffer and less functional, potentially contributing to vascular ageing.
This is particularly relevant when blood glucose is persistently elevated, as occurs in poorly controlled diabetes.
4. The brain isn't immune
AGEs have also been investigated in relation to brain ageing and neurodegenerative diseases. Glycation may affect proteins involved in neuronal function and contribute to oxidative stress and inflammation.
However, it's important not to oversimplify this into "glycation causes dementia." The relationship is complex and involves many interacting processes.
5. Why blood-sugar control matters
Glycation happens naturally as we age, but higher and more prolonged exposure to glucose generally increases glycation.
That's why metabolic health becomes increasingly important with age.
The goal isn't to eliminate carbohydrates or sugar. It's more about reducing prolonged periods of elevated blood glucose through habits such as:
Eating a diet rich in vegetables, legumes, whole foods and fibre
Limiting excessive added sugars and highly processed foods
Maintaining a healthy body composition
Regular physical activity
Getting adequate sleep
Managing chronic stress
Keeping blood glucose in a healthy range
A useful way to think about it
Ageing → more cumulative glycation → more AGE formation → stiffer/damaged proteins + oxidative stress/inflammation → progressive tissue ageing.
But there's an important nuance: glycation is one contributor to ageing, not the single cause of ageing. Oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, inflammation, DNA damage and other mechanisms all interact with it.
And there's a particularly interesting connection with collagen and skin ageing: the collagen you build and maintain today can be affected by decades of glycation exposure.
